New research reveals that patients who come off new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a major health publication shows that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals buying these medications should be cognizant of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Therapies
The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Researchers note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically see a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Doctors suggest the mechanism of the drugs explains the heightened weight return.
The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than normal may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this medication results in appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Condition?
Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Experiences
Users who have stopped the medication describe a sudden return of hunger.
"I experienced something that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled a patient.
The struggle is worsened if individuals have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts stress that while the jabs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated lifestyle changes.
