Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for an extended period when dozens of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a approach that remains especially affected by weather factors rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that these practices become not financially viable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
