The anticipation around The Game Awards has been intense, particularly after host Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling image of a strange statue. The secret has been revealed. Larian Studios is creating a completely new Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was debuted with a audacious trailer packed with memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the very opening of infernal gates.
A Different Direction
Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian warned that a follow-up to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.
That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This choice of words hints that the team could be building a faster-paced experience instead of another turn-based title. For now, it remains theory, as only a announcement clip is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is widely praised and arguably it kicked off the contemporary revival of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by detailed worlds, player agency, and deep class systems—elements that recently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust bestowed upon the player.
In contrast to modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with specialized paths that are viable by choosing a particular class or origin with a personal story.
The series is also famously permissive, allowing players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Virtually all objectives can be completed in a variety of manners, often in lateral fashion.
- You might progress the story because you remembered something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.
More to Come
It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can anticipate another adventure in this legendary franchise.
